Hello everyone,
I'm happy to report that after many (many) hours of travel, we're in
Cusco! At this point I haven't slept for about 36 hours, so this post
may turn out incredibly incoherent. For that I offer my apologies. My
initial impressions of Cusco are that it's a stunningly beautiful city.
We've ventured out a bit, but nothing too crazy. After arriving at our
hostel, we set off to eat lunch and find the clinic where we will be
working for the next month. We talked to several of the nuns that run
the clinic and they gave us an idea of what we will see on a daily
basis. Undoubtedly, this will be an incredible experience. Right now
it's almost 4pm and we're all ready to go to bed! The altitude (~3400
meters) and the fatigue have really taken a toll on us. Being this high
feels like you have a constant weight on your chest that makes it hard
to expand your lungs. Tomorrow we're scheduled to go to the clinic at
9am to begin our first day of work, and so I will undoubtedly have some
interesting things to share tomorrow. For now I leave you with some
quotes and pearls of wisdom from our trip so far. Oh, and of course some
pictures!
1. Nuns are amazing human beings!
2. "Monse", aka another form of my roommate's name, is slang for "that's so dumb" in Peru.
3. Altitude sickness is terrible.
4. The best time to come to Cusco is in June because the entire month is
devoted to celebrations of Andean heritage throughout the city.
5. It's cold in Cusco! We have no heat and it's going to drop into the
low 30s F tonight. That should be interesting...thank you Boston for
building up my thick skin.
That's all for now. I have to go put on my wool socks. The sun is going down and it's very cold outside!
Saludos,
Annelys
Waiting at the Lima Airport at around 3am. I think we look pretty good, considering...
Some of the festivities to celebrate Andean heritage during June in Cusco.
Bienvenidos a Cusco!
The very narrow, but beautiful, streets.
